Did you know litterbugs wind up costing the Missouri Highway Department of Transportation and by extension, all drivers a cool $5 MILLION a year to cover trash cleanup? The Adopt-A-Highway effort offsets about $1 million in litter pick-up costs. In 2011, more than 157,000 bags of trash and many truckloads of debris were cleaned up across the state during the month of April. No MOre Trash is 10 years old this year and the St. Louis Area Food Association along with thousands of other organizations and their volunteers are going to make this the greatest Bash ever!
Please join SAFA on Friday, May 11th at 1 pm for our 2012 No MOre Trash Bash!
SAFA's Adopt-A-Highway area begins about ½ mile North of 64/40 on Highway 94 in St. Charles county. Our stretch of Highway 94 runs past the McDonalds/Shell gas station (right side of the highway traveling North on 94) to the Quick Trip gas station (on the left side of Highway 94). Our total area is just shy of one mile.
Best place to meet is at McDonalds. There is plenty of parking around the restaurant and at the Shell station. With enough volunteers we can cover the area in about 2 hours. MODOT will supply the Orange Safety Vests and yellow trash bags. We do have grabbers to help pick up trash.
If you would like to volunteer your time on Friday, May 11th, please contact Kevin Carnes at 241-0606 or email at kcarnes@cliffedgemarketing.com.
Here are a few safety tips from MODOT:
• Be aware of oncoming traffic.
• Be cautious when crossing roadways. Use crosswalks and signals whenever possible.
• Wear your Orange MODOT Safety Vest.
• Wear light colored clothing, pants, cap or hat, long sleeve shirt, heavy work gloves and protective shoes or boots.
• Face traffic while picking up trash.
• Be alert for snakes, stinging insects, ticks and poison ivy.
• Wear sunscreen.
• Drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration.
• Don't pick up, remove the lid from, shake or even touch any hazardous substances, like syringes or drug-making equipment, or any other suspicious litter. Instead, mark the area in some way and call MODOT or your area's Missouri State Highway Patrol.
• Don't overstuff litter bags! Remember to tie bag tops and place them together, if possible, near the roadway shoulder.
Picking up litter is a great way to exercise, get fresh air and create a cleaner place to work, live and play.
